This webinar series is a live, intimate gathering of yogis and yoga professionals to explore the shoulder and shoulder pain from a scientific and yogic perspective. We limit the size to 20 so that you can get your specific questions answered.

1. FOUNDATIONS

of Yoga for Shoulder Pain

 

Learn or review shoulder anatomy and optimal movement of the shoulder and begin to apply in asana.

Specifically for:  

Yogis with basic to beginner anatomy, Yogis wanting to learn in how to safely perform asana for the shoulder

 

You will learn:

 

-The top Do's and Don'ts for the shoulder

-Embodied anatomy of the shoulder (we won’t just show you pics and cool  animations—and we will—but we will also be experiencing what we learn  through touching and moving our own shoulders and applying to basic yoga asana

-The actions of the shoulder joint

-Key muscles and structures of the shoulder joint, including the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers.

-The basic principles of how to use yoga safely and effectively to improve, and not hurt, the shoulder, including concepts of how to stabilize your shoulder

2. THERAPEUTIC ESSENTIALS

of Yoga for Shoulder Pain

Apply anatomy to yoga in-depth. Learn common shoulder imbalances, how to work with common injuries, and how to apply yoga asana therapeutically

Specifically for:  Yogis familiar with anatomy. If you are unfamiliar with anatomy you would benefit from first taking the first one as this course delves into the depth of application and assumes some basic working knowledege of the structures of the shoulders and muscles.

You will learn:

-More in-depth embodied anatomy of the shoulder.

-Common imbalances that can lead to shoulder pain (including rotator cuff  issues, frozen shoulder, tight traps, hyper-mobility, etc.)

-Key safety considerations and contraindications (things to avoid) for those  imbalances

-Specific practices from most to least accessible for each imbalance

-Therapeutic application through specific poses and sequences

Meet your teachers

Ann Swanson, MS in Yoga Therapy, C-IAYT, E-RYT500, LMT

Ann is a yoga therapist, yoga teacher trainer, and advocate for self-care (including dancing alone in your living room). Passionate about science, she has taught college anatomy and physiology and worked in a cadaver lab. She holds a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy from Maryland University of Integrative Health and is now on faculty. 

Ann specializes in helping people relieve pain with online yoga therapy. She also mentors other yoga teachers and therapists online. Ann has a way of making complex scientific ideas of anatomy and therapeutic yoga simple to understand and apply practically.

Marlysa Sullivan, MPT, C-IAYT, E-RYT500

Marlysa is a physical therapist, yoga therapist, and professor of anatomy, kinesiology, and therapeutic yoga-based courses at a graduate level. With a deep understanding of the evidence-based benefits of anatomy, yoga, and the ancient philosophy of the practice, she makes yoga safe and accessible on multiple levels.

Marlysa teaches anatomy, kinesiology and yoga therapy in a variety of settings including Maryland University of Integrative Health's master's programs. She is actively involved in research including developing an explanatory framework for yoga therapy and for conditions such as arthritis and dementia. She is a co-founder of the Center for Integrative Yoga Studies, where she runs yoga teacher training.
